On the artboard, use one of the corner handles to rotate the text to the right slightly about 5 degrees. If not, make those edits to improve the flow and test it again using pattern fill. If you spot any areas that look a bit empty and need a quick rework (as we have here!) make sure that the flow of the repeat is harmonious. It will also help you to check the flow of the design once repeated out. To navigate between different angles, use the widget that appears when you rotate the canvas view.
Drag the Rotate View tool anywhere on the canvas to change the orientation of the canvas. Test with Pattern FillĮxpand your canvas to check that all the elements repeat seamlessly around the edge of the tile. It works (sometimes) for very simple graphics. Click and hold the Hand tool and select the Rotate View tool or press Shift+H. Now you’ve created a pattern from your design. Now duplicate your elements and fill out your design, duplicating and using the axis on the toolbar wherever your motif falls off the edge of the canvas. Duplicate them again and send west on the x axis and then north -64 on the Y axis again. Duplicate this group of selected elements and send south by 64cm using the Y axis. Now, with ‘auto-selected’ ticked, select a section of elements and duplicate them. TIP: Make sure that the triangle in between your x and y is selected first. This canvas is 64cm, so you’ll see me type -64 into the Y axis to move the motif 64cm exactly north. Next, choose Window > Align.Select Align to > Align to Art Board and use the Illustrator Horizontal Align Center and Vertical Align Center buttons on the navigation bar or in the Align window to center the object or group. To do this, duplicate the motif then use the x and Y axis in the toolbar to move it north exactly the length of the canvas. Moving an object to true center on the artboard follows several steps.
You can see that this flower is hanging off our canvas at the bottom so to make this repeat work, it will need to reappear that the top of the canvas. Make sure there’s some bare canvas around it.
